These photos are a selection of methods and tools used to make Greenland paddles. They are not inclusive of my methods for making paddles. These paddles are of my design modifications, being thinner and with a larger surface blade than the common Greenland paddles. The paddle blank starts as a 1x4x8 stud. Typically any wood but the preferred is Alaskan Yellow Cedar or New Zealand Pine. Other woods shown in the photos are prototypes of some commonly available types in Rhode Island lumber yards. This method of carving is not exactly the same as used on Western Red Cedar 2x4x8 blanks. That wood is becoming very expensive and while lighter, is too brittle to make as thin as I would prefer. This album is temporary and may in the future give a better and more inclusive presentation.
